Often-times trainings include a lot of theory and facts which are then followed by reflection or practice. This workshop is designed to be a relational experience from the outset. Color Me Queer will use experiential activities and group members’ shared experiences to start to identify what feels good about queer identity, what feels uncomfortable and begin to trace the roots of why.
Anne and Benjamin will use their own experiences, music, role play, and a series of questions to help people step inside themselves and discover areas where they feel uncomfortable, inexperienced, naive or under-skilled. These places will be each person’s invitation or guide to begin a personal exploration of where their biases (conscious or unconscious) might come from.
The workshop is based on the premise that the more comfortable we become with all parts of ourselves, including the biases we hold or unexplored parts of ourselves, the less likely we are to encounter triggers which will take us out of our window of tolerance. We are also more likely to repair ruptures quickly and effectively. We are not aiming for perfection, we are hoping to support people in starting or developing the theme of queer identities in their own self practice and anti-oppressive work. We hope this will help us uncover a new level of empathy that we will then bring in to the therapy room for our clients to experience.
What people will learn?
- Participants will identify unconscious biases that they hold
- Participants will reflect on the impact of those unconscious biases on their own identity
- Participants will learn something new about themselves.
Who can attend
This workshop is open to everyone.
About Anne Benson
Anne Benson is a DDP Practitioner and Consultant; as well as a certified Brainspotting practitioner and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy practitioner. Throughout her 12 years as a therapist, her focus has always been trauma and attachment, but when she was introduced to DDP 7 years ago it quickly became her primary modality. She’s a lesbian, a Southerner, an amateur musician, a life-long learner, and mindfulness practitioner who believes enhancing awareness and acceptance of self and others deeply enhances healing in therapy. As someone who has always lived in conservative states (when residing in the US); Anne’s lived experience as a lesbian has always been part acceptance (by most family, friends and inner circle) and part defiance of social norms/systems. This has birthed a deep curiosity about all systems and cultures—who they privilege and how; what living on the margins is like; how all of us intentionally curate and inhabit our most authentic selves inside and outside certain systems.
