Welcome to a space that dares to feel. This isn’t your typical training—it’s a live, interactive workshop that invites you to explore the messy and magical world of transracial adoption through the lens of PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy).
Transracial adoption brings with it a unique constellation of joys and challenges. It asks families to navigate love across lines of race, culture, and lived experience. It asks children to grow up in homes where their racial identity may not be mirrored—and where belonging must be nurtured with intention, humility, and care.
In this session, we’ll gently challenge cognitive overthinking and lean into embodied emotional exploration. With compassion and creativity, we’ll reflect on privilege, racism, and racial trauma—while honouring the cultural identity and lived experiences of children of colour.
This is a space for (a little) movement, reflection, and brave connection. A space where White adopters can deepen their understanding, and professionals can use DDP to support families in making the invisible visible and the unspoken speakable.
This isn’t about getting it right.
It’s about showing up.
Shaking things loose.
And creating brave spaces where discomfort meets curiosity—and healing begins.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Reimagine PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) through an intersectional lens, attending to racialised identity, lived experience, and relational safety.
- Explore creative, arts-based tools that embody therapeutic principles rooted in Dyadic Developmental Practice and support emotional engagement beyond words.
- Deepen understanding of transracial adoption, including the impact of racial trauma, cultural identity, and the complexities of belonging for children of colour.
- Reflect on professional roles in supporting white adopters to engage with discomfort, privilege, and identity with openness and empathy.
- Practice making the invisible visible—bringing unspoken dynamics around race and identity into compassionate, therapeutic dialogue.
Who Can Attend
This workshop is open to anyone who has completed DDP Level One training. Come prepared to move (a little), play in a safe space.
About Lucy Joy
Lucy Joy is a Creative Arts Psychotherapist, DDP Practitioner, Dramatherapist and is EMDR Trained. Lucy is a freelancer in private practice working with families and adults. She specialises in developmental trauma, dissociation and racialised trauma held within the mind, body and soul. Her work bridges clinical insight with creative expression, specialising in developmental trauma, dissociation, and racialised trauma. Lucy is also an adoptee who was transracially adopted.
