Therapeutic Parenting and Care in Healing Childhood Wounds
Building a trusting relationship with the help of DDP
Trainer: Mervin Maier
The DDP Method (Dyadic Developmental Practice, Psychotherapy and Parenting) is a family based model for working with and parenting of children that have been hurt, neglected and experience attachment disruption. These children have experienced developmental trauma and are at a greater risk of functional, relational and physical difficulties for up to 50 years of life, if untreated (ACE Study). Because of their past they are likely to struggle with healthy parenting.
DDP aims to facilitate a trusting, intersubjective, relational bond with the deployment of special tools and attitudes, including a therapeutic stance called PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy), Affective/Reflective Dialogue and other interventions.
Goals to teach include:
- How DDP helps with the development of healthy attachment (safety).
- Polyvagal theory, keeping clients open and engaged.
- Neurobiology and DDP; the “parenting brain”.
- Intersubjectivity (Primary and Secondary).
- PACE and affect regulation.
- Affective/Reflective Dialogue.
- Development of a coherent, autobiographical narrative.
- Working on parents/carers.
- Blocked care/blocked trust.
- DDP in a therapeutic setting.
Learning objectives:
- Understand DDP and the development of healthy attachment.
- Understand the basic tenets of Polyvagal theory.
- The neurology of DDP.
- PACE and affect regulation.
- Use of DDP in a therapeutic setting and parenting.
Who is it for?
Professionals working with traumatised children and young people in different contexts and who are in the position to care, assess or provide treatment/therapies for them including foster carers/parents, psychologists, child psychiatrists, therapists and social workers in foster and residential care, family guidance clinics, child protection and welfare, psychiatric units, and special education in schools. The training is also suitable for those working with adult clients/patients, broadening our understanding of the basic elements of healing interaction and why DDP’s core principles are also adaptable to adult therapy and treatment.
