Dissociation

A natural and universal defense against overwhelmingly negative experiences, and involves a disconnect of the mind from outside realities, most often as a response to trauma. In severe forms, disconnection occurs in the functions of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception. For example, a child may think about an event that was tremendously upsetting yet have no feelings about it.
