Trigger

Seeing, smelling or hearing something (often a smaller experience or stimulus than the original) that sets off another feeling, thought or sensation that is connected in some way to some event or experience in the past.  For example, a foster parent’s stern voice may trigger a foster child’s memory of verbal abuse and cause the child to become dysregulated.
