Trainer: Joy Gamble, Educational and Child Psychologist
This is an introductory course on Dyadic Developmental Practice: Psychotherapy and Parenting, an intervention model developed by Dan Hughes, Clinical Psychologist, USA.
This approach assists therapists and professionals to understand and effectively support children, young people and their families. In this model, theory and research in the areas of developmental trauma, attachment theory, intersubjectivity and child development are integrated to produce a therapeutic and parenting approach used for relationship development and trauma resolution. DDP recognises the vital role which adoptive parents, foster carers and residential workers play as primary attachment figures in the recovery of traumatised, attachment-resistant children.
The principles and interventions are presented through formal presentations, discussion, videotape of sessions, role-play, and hand outs.
Who is it For?
The training is relevant and open to therapists and practitioners who have experience in working with children and young people with trauma-attachment problems and their foster, adoptive or birth families.
Note from Headlands:
“This DDP Level One course will have a particular focus on using DDP in Residential and Educational Settings.
Headlands is an independent day and residential special school that provides high quality education and care to children and young people aged 7 to 19 years. Our therapeutic model of education and residential care is based on the principles of Dyadic Developmental Practice (DDP) and has been developed by the staff at Headlands residential homes and school. The model is designed for children and young people who have experienced early developmental trauma and those young people with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Conditions.”
The majority of attendees will be from this organisation with some places being sold to the public.
Please note that while Level One and Two are open access for professionals working with children and families, there are specific requirements that need to be fulfilled for those who plan to go on to apply for certification as a Practitioner in DDP. Please refer to What is required before starting the practicum for further information.
