This is an introductory 4-day course on Dyadic Developmental Practice: Psychotherapy and Parenting, an intervention model developed by Dan Hughes, Clinical Psychologist, USA.

This approach assists therapists and other professionals to understand and effectively support children, young people and their families. In this model, theory and research in the areas of developmental trauma, attachment theory, intersubjectivity and child development are integrated to produce a therapeutic and parenting approach used for relationship development and trauma resolution.  DDP recognises the vital role which adoptive parents, foster carers and residential workers play as primary attachment figures in the recovery of traumatised, attachment-resistant children.

This is an education focussed DDP Level One training pilot and course objectives are as follows:

  • Understand the DDP practice framework and how it can be brought into educational practice
  • Explore and practice using the central components of DDP
  • Understand the theoretical foundations to DDP
  • Apply this to a therapeutic approach combined with teaching for children who have experienced developmental trauma
  • Consider how the model can be helpful when talking to the parents or carers of the children
  • Apply this framework to a regulatory and behaviour support approach which can help the children with their behaviour in school

The principles and interventions are presented through formal presentations, discussion, videotape of sessions, role-play, and hand outs.

Who is it For?

The training is aimed at any education professionals interested in applying DDP principles in education settings, who may have experience in working with children and young people with trauma-attachment problems and their foster, adoptive or birth families.
