Everyday Parenting with Security and Love

Using PACE to provide the foundations for attachment

Trainer: Kim Golding

This day provides an introduction to DDP-informed parenting as described in Kim’s latest book – Everyday Parenting with Security and Love.

Everyday Parenting with Security and Love - Kim GoldingDyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) was originally developed by Dan Hughes as a therapeutic intervention for families who are fostering or had adopted children with significant developmental trauma and insecurity of attachment. This intervention is theoretically based on the models of attachment theory and intersubjectivity and is consistent with the needs of children and young people who have experienced developmental trauma. DDP has a broad application within services as Dyadic Developmental Practice. This provides a set of principles that can inform and enrich parenting.

DDP informed parenting helps parents to emotionally connect with their children in ways which increases feelings of safety and security. This recognises that the children often fear such connection and supports parents to help their children overcome these fears. Using two hands for parenting, emotional connection and nurture combines with boundaries and discipline to provide a ‘connection with correction’ approach to parenting children. It draws on the parents’ capacity to be mind-minded so that they can adopt the attitude of PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity and empathy) as described by Dan Hughes.

Who is the training for?

It is aimed at practitioners and parents who want to increase their understanding of parenting a child who is insecure because of the experience of developmental trauma.
